just received mine today - first impressions

Mine just came today (15-12-2007). I am a first day donor and live in Wheaton Illinois.

Just a few first impressions (note that this is coming from a computer professional with long experience in microsoft and non-microsoft systems)

First the good:
It is very simple.  The instructions are graphical and many of the functions I have discovered by just poking at it a bit.
It is very solid.  Its constructions feels like it could tolerate a good bit of abuse.
It connected to my network easily once I had turned off MAC filtering - still have to find the network card MAC.
The battery came nearly fully charged
The browser, which is the only app I have really used up 'til now (am using it to enter this post) is capable though I will miss smoe of my Firefox capabilities and plugins.

Now the frustrating:
The browser.  One very annoying thing, and perhaps there is a way to avoid this, is that as soon as I bookmarked smoething, it showed a thumbnale of that page in a bar at the bottom that takes up about an eighth of the screen. I can't seem to get rid of it.
The mouse sometimes jumps erratically.  At its best it seems difficult to control.  At its worst it jumps to distant locations on the screen

I hope I can solve the above two.  I have much more to explore.

Mac address:
press ctrl-alt-fn-1 to get to a login. Login as root (no password). At the bash shell prompt, type: ifconfig
and use the mac address next to eth0.

Bookmarks at the bottom of the browser - that strange icon at the top that looks like a filmstrip seems to hide that.

I got mine this afternoon (Sat Dec 15, St. Louis, MO (I ordered mine about 10am on the first day ordering opened).

I'm finding it confusing the way the screen keeps bouncing full-screen then shrunk in the middle. But I keep telling myself that it's designed for kids, not me.

The keyboard is a bit small for me for touch-typing, and I have medium female hands, so I can just imagine how rough it is for large adult male hands.

Does anyone know if you can plug a usb mouse and/or keyboard into it?

Thanks Eden.  That appears to work, though I sometimes have to do i ta few times in a session.

Yes, mbelvadi, I can use the film strip to hide and show the  bookmarks.

Now, however, I am extremely disappointed that the bookmarks are not persistent across sessions.  This seems so strange, non-functional and simply impossible that I assume I must be missing something.  However, I saw a post by someone tyring to install Firefox just for persistent bookmarks.

Still, I am loving this little machine.

Thanks for all help,
Dave

By following the mailing lists, i've learned that global bookmarks (which you can access from _all_ browse instances) is in the roadmap.

That confused me too at first. If you switch from the Browse to Activity "tab" (I don't know what to call those, on the top left) you will then see a choice on the top right to "Keep" the thing, and then it shows up in the Journal. Experiment with switching between Activity, Browse, and View when viewing a web page, to get a sense of all of the functional options possible.

I'm still working on my conceptual model of Sugar, but it seems that the Journal is kind of a combination of Windows Explorer (for external USB devices and SD cards), Bookmarks, Firefox-History, Recent Documents, Firefox-Downloads, and maybe some other functions that Windows users are used to being in lots of different places.
