Introductions and Campcaster

Hi all,

I'd like to first introduce myself. My name is Douglas Arellanes, and I am one of the people involved in Campware (www.campware.org), which is a project to create free and open source tools for media organizations in developing countries.

One of our projects is called Campcaster, and it is a free and open source radio playout and automation system. We are working with community radio stations in several countries, including in Sierra Leone, Senegal, and now in Liberia.

I ordered my XO on Day 2 (ordering was kind of complicated due to various PayPal difficulties). It's for my 7-year-old daughter, but of course I'm looking forward to hacking around on it too :-) It still hasn't arrived at my parents' house in California, but I'm hoping this will soon be resolved.

One of the things I'd like to try out on the XO is to see whether Campcaster can run on it. It runs quite well on Ubuntu (that's our target distribution) and Debian, but we haven't had anyone capable of making RPMs as of yet.

If anyone has experience making RPMs, I'd be quite thrilled, as I think Campcaster might be pretty fun for making micro-radio stations in the schools where the XO is deployed.

The newest version of Campcaster, which we're working on now, uses Gstreamer 0.10 for its audio playout; if Totem is running on the XO already, maybe that means Gstreamer is in there too?

There are a few dependencies that might make it too heavy to run on an XO, though, including Apache, PHP and Postgres. But hey, it's worth a try, right?

Looking forward to talking with fellow radio-heads...
