Mine hasn't arrived yet.  So I was wondering if you could tell me if there is a manufacture date on the XO ?
Have a theory maybe they stopped the line to slip stream hardware changes. ( Saw a mention on one of the OLPC wiki pges that they wanted to slip stream some hardware ECOs).

Check out some new images.

I think this might be a clue for the person that asked about any shipping info. I found nothing on the computer, but I did find stuff on the box. I highlighted it in yellow for you. I hope this helps. If anything, you are getting a computer that is even more thoughtfully fussed over than ours:)

And of course more kitty photos.

The concierge was so irritated by me constantly asking, the day that it arrived they scrawled in all caps 'IT IS IN' on the package sign in sheet. I think someone might be deserving of a muffin basket:)

You can write the editor of the Economist and they will publish your article under the corrections. I think a lot of people should write to them Smiley

I have to say that I am shocked by all the grumbling that people are making. I am loving my Poot! Primarily, I got it so that I don't have to lug a heavy and expensive laptop around when I am traveling. I also needed Poot as a PDF viewer. Recently I bought software worth 3K but it did not come with the manuals. The manuals could be purchased separately for $150 dollars!!! Not only that, the manuals were also only in Black and White. Since I got Poot, I have been reading the Full-Color PDFs on Poot and it is costing me nada!

I wish people can go back and think about the first Apple or Windows system. I think that the XO is exactly where it needs to be and it will only get better with updates to the OS and users developing their own software.

What baffles me the most is that people are distressed that it isn't clock-stopping technology. The ease of use, the educational cause, and the fact that this beautiful machine is open source is enough to get behind.

I am looking forward to what is in store for XO and my Poot!

By the way, if anyone is interested in seeing Poot in St. Martin, you can follow this little link:

For those with a cat fetish, we got a great picture of our cat, who wears a cone and a baby tee, instructing me on how to use Poot. It is quite a crack up. Of course, if you are into cats:)

Enjoy!

Exactly, stephen!

There's something about my little XO that reminds me of a lot of the technology of the late 70s and early 80s. Unlike the newfangled ciphering boxes of today, the TRS-80 and early Apples and so forth had a sort of built in learning curve that encouraged you to explore and figure out how they worked. There was a sense of accomplishment and excitement that's just not there with a closed source Windows machine, or even most of the GUI intensive Linux distributions.

These are beautiful little machines, and any lingering doubts I might've had about the effectiveness of the project disappeared once I got my hands on one.

I wish I could get one for my nephew now, but he can't have mine.

Actually, I'd say the low power consumption, while yielding such high performance, is as 'clock-stopping' as any of the high performance articles I've seen.  I mean, granted, when new computers ran at this 400MHz, and only had 256M RAM, they consumed a lot less power than they do now - but I recall it being significantly more than the XO uses.

In any event, the vast majority of computer models out there are not innovative in the least - they're simply a re-juggling of various options to target a specific audience.  I don't see why OLPC's laptop really *needs* to be an innovative masterpiece, when most computers built aren't.  Also, while there are much faster processors available for not that much more money, I am not aware of any other laptop at any speed that is available for under $300.
